Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL QUESTIONS
Why Buy from Griffin Armament?
With over 20 years of industry experience with in-house machining, design, and rigorous R&D, Griffin Armament is not only the oldest privately owned silencer manufacturer in the USA, but also one of the most experienced. Our company was founded by two Wisconsin brothers, former Army snipers who served in the infantry and later as contractors with the State Department. They have been in real world situations that give them the experience to know what discerning customers want in a silencer, and other firearm products. We’re not just another conglomerate owned by some banker. This is ALL we do.
How do I pick the right silencer for me?
Choosing a suppressor to fit your needs depends entirely on your intended use-case. Griffin has a unique model suited to just about every type of shooter there is, and our knowledgeable CS staff is standing by to assist you make the right choice. The first consideration is how much you are willing to spend.
A higher ticket silencer will usually include advanced features – you pay for what you get. This is usually an upgraded locking mounting system, integrated flash hider end caps, or advanced baffle technology/manufacturing processes such as 3D printed silencers, and tubeless laser welding. These features improve the silencer, but usually add cost.
Another main consideration is weight and firing schedule. These two usually go hand in hand. A more durable suppressor, designed to take a heavy beating from fast shooters, is usually going to weigh a bit more than a more practical use suppressor. For example, the DUAL-LOK® HRT-556 is Griffin’s most durable 5.56mm suppressor weighing in at 16.0 oz. The DUAL-LOK® 5 is its “practical use” counterpart, weighing in at only 11.8 oz. A lighter can is usually more accurate and less straining on the shooter.
Most people DO NOT need an overwhelmingly durable suppressor. Although the peace of mind is great, all Griffin suppressors are warrantied for life so if something bad were to happen (while highly unlikely due to the strength of materials and build quality) we will get you taken care of. In our opinion, we usually opt for the lightest suppressor the mission calls for. A good exception to this rule would be law enforcement officers, military, competition speed shooters, or anyone with a full-auto firearm.
Finally, you have to choose a mounting system, and this may be the most important consideration of all. With so many different mounting systems on the market, it may seem daunting when choosing a system to standardize across a collection of firearms. No one likes getting all of their guns outfitted with a certain mount, only to later learn the mount is unreliable, prone to breakage, or difficult to use. Not only is this a monetary investment purchasing the compatible parts, it also eats up a lot of time to change out mounting systems across a host of firearms and silencers.
Luckily, Griffin has been designing and perfecting mounting systems for over 10 years, and based on industry feedback, our systems are regarded as some of the most reliable, easy to use, and durable systems available to date. You can click on the next FAQ tab if you would like to read more about mounting systems.
Which mounting system should I use?
Choosing a mounting system that fits your needs is crucial to achieve a pleasant suppressed shooting experience. Below you can read about each mounting system Griffin offers, an explanation of how it works, and why someone should choose that system for their specific application.
DUAL-LOK® – Ideal for users desiring an accurate locking mount free from the worry of accidental loosening. Griffin’s most secure system, and arguable the most secure system of all time. This QD locking mechanism is basically a removable pin and weld. The first “lock” is an internal taper ahead of the quick ACME threads which creates a friction lock and gas seal perfectly aligning the suppressor to the bore of the rifle. The second lock is a sprung collar with teeth that engage with notches on the DUAL-LOK® muzzle device, firmly locking the suppressor in place preventing unwanted rotation and loosening. This system is incredibly lightweight, fast to use, highly accurate, and virtually wear-proof due to it having no ratcheting metal on metal parts like other common locking systems on the market.
Taper Mount – Ideal for users desiring a simplistic, yet reliable system that excels in maintaining accuracy and minimal POI shift. Taper mounts have become very common in the suppressor industry because they are simple to use and provide significantly enhanced suppressor retention over Direct Thread applications. The taper interface requires 1.5x the force to break loose as it does to install, creating a reliable friction lock and forcing perfect alignment with the bore of the firearm. This mount is arguably the most accurate option available.
GATE-LOK™ – Ideal for users desiring the fastest attachment method and compatibility with A2 birdcages. Griffin’s GATE-LOK™ mounting system is one of the most unique on the market. This ultra-QD system was designed to interface with milspec Colt-pattern A2 birdcages, common to many AR-15’s on the market today. This means you don’t have to fiddle with a proprietary muzzle device if you don’t want to. This system works by sliding a spring-locked “gate” into the BFA groove on the A2 (or Griffin GATE-LOK™ muzzle device), utilizing a zero-tolerance fit for concentric bore alignment with an internal collar that contacts the end of the birdcage.
EZ-LOK™ – QD pistol mounting system for users desiring a universal thread pitch across a their handguns with increased retention over direct thread. EZ-LOK™ can be looked at as a “Mini Taper Mount” designed for use with tilt or fixed barrel handguns and PCCs. The simple system is comprised of two parts: the bEZ-LOK™ barrel adapter which is affixed the muzzle of the firearm, and the EZ-LOK™ piston installed into the booster of the pistol suppressor. This system provides a ~3-5x increase in suppressor retention over diret thread, is much faster to install and remove, and creates a universal thread pitch across all your host firearms eliminating the need to change out pistons to accommodate different thread pitches.
Direct Thread – Ideal for users who don’t want to utilize any muzzle devices, or for pin and weld applications. Direct Thread is the least secure option, but also the most straightforward and cost-effective. These silencers have threading machined into them that fits perfectly the threads on your firearm (1/2×28 TPI or 5/8×24 TPI) with no extra parts necessary. Simply screw the silencer directly to your barrel, torque it tight, and you are ready to go. This method is not recommended by Griffin in most cases due to its lack of retention security, and is prone to walking loose pretty easily during extended fire, risking a baffle strike or worse.
3-Lug – Ideal for users desiring a QD locking system for PCC applications. 3-Lug mounting systems were made famous by the MP5 and are still used today due to their simplicity and security when used with PCCs, or fixed barrel handguns. This system works by inserting the lugged barrel coupler into a slotted sprung booster fitting, then rotating about a quarter turn to lock the lugs into place behind the fitting.

Why pick the A2S-QD™ or the GP-NATO™?
What is a Military GATE-LOK™ (MGL™) Silencer?
Griffin’s MGL™ line of suppressors is a purpose-built family designed to interface seamlessly with KAC firearms like the M-110, MK11, and SR-25 utilizing an improved locking Gate system that mounts to the gas block just like the real KAC suppressors. We developed this line after trying to acquire a few of our own and finding it nearly impossible either due to lack of availability, or an extremely high price – regularly exceeding $10,000 for one suppressor.
Key Considerations:
- KAC Rifle Compatibility: These silencers are designed specifically, and only, for the KAC M-110, MK11, and SR-25 EC/EMC/ECC carbines. We cannot guarantee fitment with any other brands, models, or clones, adn the geometry of the gas block, flash hider, and barrel profile are critically important for mounting these suppressors.
- Modern Designs at a Great Price: MGL™ Suppressors are made using Griffin’s advanced tubeless laser-welding technology to yield lighter suppressors than their KAC counterparts, with similar or better sound/flash reduction, an improved locking gate, all at a much more attractive price.
- These are not clones: These are KAC compatible suppressors with a Griffin twist and seamless mounting system. Personally, we think they look cooler than the originals.
If you own one of these original guns from KAC and are trying to complete the package but having a ahrd time finding a suppressor at a decent price, the MGL™ Suppressors might be right up your alley.
How do I clean my suppressor?
When using an ultrasonic cleaner on our user serviceable suppressors, we advise only putting unfinished components into the sonic cleaner. Things like the stainless steel baffles, piston, and spring can be put into sonic cleaners. The solution we typically use for this is Zep Heavy Duty Citrus Cleaner. Make sure not to use the sonic cleaner for finished components like the tube body, end caps, muzzle devices, mounting interfaces, etc. For cleaning the inside of the tube body, a round wire brush is a good option for cleaning. If you want to get rid of some carbon build up, you can plug the tube, and pour some Ballistol or CLP down the shaft. Once you clean it out, we recommend taking it to the range and shooting 30 rounds or so through it to clear out any remaining cleaning solution.
For fully-welded suppressors like our Recce® line, you CAN put the entire suppressor into an ultrasonic cleaner without risking damage to the unit; however, you should be aware this will most likely strip or ruin the Cerakote finish on the exterior of the silencer.
How often should I clean my suppressor?
How often you clean your suppressor is very much a personal preference, and can depend on the type of ammunition you use. Generally speaking, for center fire rifle ammunition, ~2,000 rounds is a good number. At this round count, the baffles will have a good deal of carbon built up, but should still be relatively easy to remove.
Welded Griffin rifle suppressors don’t NEED to be cleaned ever if using good quality centerfire ammunition, and effects on performance should not be noticeable for the life of the suppressor. As a general rule of thumb, if you start to notice a decrease in sound performance or notice the can feeling heavier in the hand, this is a good sign the suppressor should be cleaned.
Rimfire suppressors and pistol suppressors dirty much faster due to the type of ammunition, powder, and exposed lead common to those cartridges. This is why most pistol and rimfire suppressors are user serviceable. We recommend cleaning these types of silencers every 1,000-2,000 rounds to prevent carbon from locking the baffles inside the tube body.
The main part to be concerned with is the mounting system. Keeping threads and tapers clear of carbon buildup will ensure solid lockup for years to come.

Generally speaking, for center fire rifle ammunition, 2,000-4,000 rounds is a good number.
